Description
Linear elements—whether rendered through the key block's carved contour lines or implied by the hard-edged meeting of color fields—are central to the woodblock print medium, and this untitled abstract print by Kiyochika may explore the expressive range of the printed line in a non-representational context. His work differs from earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) in its tendency to subordinate line to tone, using atmospheric gradation to define form rather than outline. Abstract compositions in this mode may eliminate the key block's defining role entirely, constructing the image through color blocks alone, or retain linear elements as structure against which tonal passages play. The [washi](/glossary/washi) substrate's absorbency affects line character, allowing varying degrees of ink bleed at carved edges.
