Description
This untitled print by Kobayashi Kiyochika likely dates from his Meiji-period production and reflects his characteristic treatment of the woodblock format as a medium capable of subtle tonal effects. Kiyochika's prints were produced in the standard [oban](/glossary/oban) format on [washi](/glossary/washi), using a production process that required close collaboration between artist and workshop. His use of multiple light-value pigment layers — carefully sequenced to build atmosphere around a central light source or to model the gradual darkening of a twilight sky — demanded precise registration across blocks. The result, when successfully executed, achieves a diffused luminosity distinct from both the graphic clarity of earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) and the direct representation of Western realist painting, constituting an original visual mode specific to Kiyochika's response to Meiji modernity.
