Description
This catalogued print carries an abstract subject designation and has not been identified within Kiyochika's documented output. The abstract category in ukiyo-e cataloging may cover several distinct production types: purely decorative compositions, printer's demonstrations of color and gradation capability, or imagery whose subject cannot be determined from the surviving impression alone. Abstract works may also include kyôka ehon (illustrated comic poetry anthologies) in which visual elements serve decorative rather than purely representational functions alongside verse. Multiple woodblocks required for nishiki-e printing occasionally produced proof sheets that circulated as collector's items separately from the finished edition; such technical documents, showing individual color separations or gradation tests, might carry abstract designations in modern institutional catalogs where the relationship to the finished print has been lost.
