Description
This untitled print from Kobayashi Kiyochika's output represents his approach to the woodblock medium as adapted to Meiji-era visual experience. Kiyochika's technical method differed from earlier ukiyo-e masters in its emphasis on tonal mass over outline: forms are often defined more by areas of light and shadow than by the bold contour lines associated with Hokusai or Hiroshige. The carver's role in translating Kiyochika's painted sketches into the block required an understanding of how graduated tones would print across multiple pigment passes. Subjects across his untitled works range from river and harbor views to nocturnal street scenes and seasonal landscapes, all treated with the same interest in capturing transient atmospheric conditions that characterizes his identified meisho-e.
