Description
Compositional rhythm in woodblock printing emerges from the repetition, variation, and contrast of tonal masses, and this untitled abstract print by Kiyochika may be understood as a study in compositional rhythm removed from representational subject matter. His kōsen-ga prints characteristically establish rhythmic relationships between light sources and shadow zones, between the bright glare of artificial illumination and the receding darkness of surrounding space. In abstract compositions, these rhythmic relationships operate as pure tonal architecture. The physical rhythm of [baren](/glossary/baren) application during printing—the artisan's circular or back-and-forth strokes across the [washi](/glossary/washi) surface—also leaves a subtle trace in the ink distribution that, in favorable light, becomes visible as a textural pattern underlying the finished composition.
