Description
An untitled print from Kiyochika's output, catalogued under abstract subjects, this work reflects the artist's sustained interest in the visual effects of artificial illumination — gaslight, lantern light, or the glow of fire — against the nighttime atmosphere of Meiji-era Tokyo. Kiyochika frequently structured compositions around a single luminous point, allowing surrounding forms to dissolve into dark indigo or black gradations achieved through layered pigment applications on dampened washi. This atmospheric approach departed from the flat, outline-driven conventions of earlier Edo printmaking and drew heavily on his exposure to Western graphic arts during the 1870s.
