Description
This untitled woodblock print by Kiyochika demonstrates his facility with atmospheric compression — the technique of reducing spatial depth through mist, smoke, or darkness so that forms emerge only partially from an undifferentiated ground. The abstract classification suggests the work may foreground tonal and textural effects over recognizable subject matter. Multiple color blocks would have been required to build up the dark, layered grounds characteristic of his night and twilight scenes, with the carver working in close collaboration with the printer to preserve the delicate [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations from block to [baren](/glossary/baren)-pressed paper. The result sits at the intersection of Western tonal painting and Japanese printmaking craft.
