Description
Catalogued as an untitled abstract work within Kiyochika's known output, this print lacks the subject identification that characterizes the majority of his documented series. Works with abstract classifications in Japanese print collections may include surimono—privately commissioned small-format prints incorporating decorative elements alongside poetry—a format in which ornamental or symbolic imagery appears independent of the narrative or topographic subjects typical of commercial print series. Kiyochika produced surimono and New Year greeting prints (nengajô), formats that often employed non-narrative visual compositions in which bokashi gradients and sometimes metallic or mica pigments were deployed for decorative effect rather than representational purpose. If this print derives from a surimono context, it would have been produced in a small edition for private distribution among a literary or artistic circle rather than for commercial sale.
