Description
This woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika, untitled and categorized as abstract, likely represents one of his more experimental compositions in which the kosen-ga light treatment operates at maximum atmospheric intensity. His prints of this kind push the contrast between luminous center and dark surround to the point where the composition reads almost as a study in figure-ground reversal — the light field reading as form against the dark ground, or vice versa. The technique required the printer to apply pale pigments with extreme care, using a finely shaped [baren](/glossary/baren) to deposit ink in the central luminous zone without contaminating adjacent dark passages. Kiyochika's abstract prints are among the least studied works in his catalog and may represent a significant body of formal experimentation.
