Description
This untitled print reflects aspects of Kiyochika's formal experimentation during the period when he was actively synthesizing Western pictorial conventions with the [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) tradition. His abstract works frequently exploit the material properties of [washi](/glossary/washi), allowing the paper's soft absorbency to contribute to the diffusion of color fields. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) passages — gradated areas produced by applying pigment to partially dampened blocks — function here less as descriptive atmosphere than as compositional zones in their own right. The absence of a recorded title suggests the work may have circulated outside his major [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) series, possibly as an independent study or magazine illustration exploring formal problems.
