Description

A second version or variant state of Kiyochika's view of the Mitsuke district in Ushigome, a subject he returned to as he did with several Tokyo locations—likely reflecting either a reissue by a different publisher or a compositional variant produced from related but distinct blocks. In Kiyochika's practice, multiple versions of a single Tokyo view are not uncommon: publisher changes, block wear, and demand for popular subjects all contributed to variant states. Differences between this version and related editions may appear in the tonal rendering of the sky, the color of lantern or gas-lamp light, or the registration of the bokashi passages that define the composition's nocturnal mood. The Mitsuke quarter's combination of quiet residential streets and the ambient light of a modernizing city is the defining subject of both versions, organized around Kiyochika's mature approach to atmospheric urban stillness in the woodblock medium.
