Description
The Ariake-rō, a prominent riverside restaurant in the Imado district at the northeastern edge of Asakusa, was one of several celebrated establishments along the Sumida River that Kiyochika depicted as part of his documentation of Meiji-era Tokyo. The suffix -rō (楼) designates a multi-story dining and entertainment venue, and the Ariake-rō's wooden galleries and paper lanterns offered Kiyochika ideal material for his kōsen-ga technique. His atmospheric approach—employing graduated bokashi and thinly layered pigment on washi—allowed him to render the glow of lamplight against darkened water with a luminosity unprecedented in the woodblock tradition. The composition likely presents the restaurant from the riverbank or across the water, situating the lit structure against an evening sky. This print belongs to a group of related Ariake-rō views in which Kiyochika explored shifting light conditions at the same site, each impression constituting a distinct atmospheric study rather than a simple topographical record.
