Description

This print depicts the Ariake-rō restaurant at Imado, one of Kiyochika's several views of this celebrated riverside establishment in the northeastern Asakusa district of Tokyo. The variant romanization reflects common Meiji-era transcription practices for the long vowel in -rō (楼), the architectural designation for a multi-story entertainment and dining venue. The Ariake-rō's wooden galleries, paper lanterns, and proximity to the Sumida River made it ideally suited to Kiyochika's kōsen-ga approach, which depended on lit structures set against dark water or evening sky to achieve its characteristic luminous effects. The composition likely presents the restaurant from the riverfront or a nearby embankment, with lamplight reflecting in broken patterns across the water surface. Graduated bokashi washes in deep blue and black establish the night atmosphere, while the warm tones of interior light and lantern glow constitute the print's primary chromatic interest. Staffage figures along the waterfront provide scale and suggest the social activity of a busy pleasure venue.
