Description

Kiyochika's Seishin guntai hôgei no zu depicts the public reception of troops returning victorious from the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), a subject that generated a significant body of commemorative print imagery. The welcoming scene likely shows crowds, official delegations, and celebratory decoration in a public space — a visual equivalent of the newspaper accounts that framed military success as national achievement. Kiyochika's war prints combine ukiyo-e triptych conventions with a more documentary treatment of modern equipment, uniforms, and public space that reflects his exposure to Western compositional models. The vertical format of individual sheets, or the extended horizontal of a triptych, accommodated crowd scenes by stacking figures in raked perspective. These prints were produced rapidly to meet public demand during and immediately after the war. Their compositional quality is often secondary to reportorial immediacy, and they circulated as affordable commemorative objects alongside illustrated newspapers and photograph albums.
