Description
Yanagiwara ya-u — "Evening rain at Yanagiwara" — identifies this undated print as a rain-and-evening composition at the willow-lined Kanda River embankment that was one of Kiyochika's most productive subjects in his Tokyo meisho career. The Yanagiwara district's combination of weeping willows, canal atmosphere, and lantern-lit commerce made it the ideal site for his rain-and-night compositional style. This variant of the dated 1881 Rainy Night at Yanagiwara likely belongs to the same documentation project, perhaps a different vantage point or different rain conditions.
