Description
The fifth numbered print in Kodama's 2022 'Scenery over there' sequence, executed at 70 × 100 cm — a near-square sheet at the upper end of what hand-pulled silkscreen accommodates without industrial registration equipment. The series title positions the viewer at a contemplative remove from the depicted landscape, and the suffix '_22_05' confirms a sustained serial practice in which compositions are catalogued by year and iteration rather than individually titled. Silkscreen permits the layered flat-colour fields and crisp registration boundaries that distinguish Kodama's work from the tonal gradations associated with woodblock printmaking; effects analogous to bokashi, when present, are achieved through gradient stencils or split-fountain ink application rather than brushed pigment on a block. The large square format aligns with conventions current among Kyoto-trained contemporary printmakers, where sheet size has displaced the traditional oban as a marker of ambition. As a graduate of both Kyoto Seika University and Kyoto City University of Arts, Kodama works within the silkscreen-forward lineage that has come to characterise the CWAJ Print Show's contemporary cohort, where this print's series was exhibited in 2025.
