$200–$1,500. Common flower prints: $200–$500. Key value factors: Shoda Koho's elegant nature prints are beautifully produced and accessible to beginning collectors.
A lone egret stands in falling rain in this oban woodblock print, its white plumage stark against the gray wash of the surrounding downpour. Shoda places the bird at the compositional center, its long neck and legs forming elegant vertical lines that counter the diagonal slashes of rain. The egret is a classic subject of kacho-e, the bird-and-flower genre in which Shoda particularly excelled, and here he strips the motif to its barest elements: one bird, rain, and the suggestion of water at its feet. The contrast between the egret's stillness and the rain's relentless motion gives the print its emotional charge. Shoda uses minimal color, allowing the interplay of black ink, white paper, and gray washes to carry the image. The bird appears neither distressed nor sheltered, simply present in the weather, embodying a patience that feels almost philosophical.
