Description
Without a title, this print must be read primarily through Gajin's formal vocabulary: his preference for monochrome or limited tonal ranges, his use of heavily dampened [washi](/glossary/washi) to soften carved lines into diffuse, painterly edges, and his tendency toward quiet, unpopulated subjects — landscapes, architecture, natural forms. The [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) principle of the artist cutting and printing the block himself is central to Gajin's practice, and the untitled designation may reflect his emphasis on formal and material qualities over descriptive content. Works from his post-1945 Sendai period often register a stripped-down visual language shaped by loss, reconstruction, and international exhibition contexts including his solo shows in Los Angeles and Paris. The absence of a title invites attention to surface, tone, and the texture of the printed washi itself as primary expressive elements.
