Description
Cherry blossom prints (hanami subjects) constituted a significant portion of Kotozuka's output, as [sakura](/glossary/sakura) represented both peak seasonal spectacle in Kyoto and a perennially commercial subject. This [oban](/glossary/oban)-format work likely depicts blossoming branches — possibly against a pale graduated sky or in the vicinity of a Kyoto garden or temple — using delicate pink tones built from multiple overprinted passes. The rendering of individual petals in woodblock print depends on fine carving of the cherry or honoki block to preserve thin raised lines, and the layering of translucent inks gives the blossoms their characteristic softness. Without a specific date or location subtitle, this print likely served as a generalized celebration of the sakura season rather than a topographic record.
