Description
A second variant in Kotozuka's cherry blossom series, this woodblock print likely differs from related works in its compositional framing or seasonal mood. Kotozuka's [sakura](/glossary/sakura) prints ranged from close-focus branch studies to prints incorporating architectural or garden elements — a stone lantern, garden wall, or distant roof — that anchor the blossoms within a specific Kyoto location. The technical challenge of printing pale pink on [washi](/glossary/washi) without over-saturation required careful control of pigment dilution and [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure, and Kyoto printers trained in this tradition were well equipped for such nuance. The two-tone gradation typical of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga)-influenced work, moving from pale pink at the bloom clusters toward a deeper sky tone, may be present here as a compositional device.
