Description
Mt. Takao (高雄, also read Takao) in northwestern Kyoto is celebrated for its autumn maple foliage and for Jingoji temple, whose pagoda punctuates the forested slopes above the Kiyotaki River. Kotozuka's print likely positions the viewer at a mid-slope vantage looking across the gorge, with the river's bouldered channel visible in the lower composition and the densely wooded mountain rising beyond. Autumn on Takao is defined by layers of momiji in every red-orange register, a subject that taxed woodblock printers with the demand for multiple overprinted transparent color blocks to build up the chromatic density of the foliage. Cool blue rock faces and the white water of the Kiyotaki provide the foliage's chromatic foil. The composition capitalizes on the site's dramatic topography—steep slopes, deep gorges, and the contrast of sacred architecture embedded in dense natural forest.
