Description
Without a recorded title, this print's subject can only be inferred from Kotozuka's established output. The majority of his untitled works are landscape or architectural subjects drawn from Kyoto and its immediate surroundings—temple gardens, seasonal foliage, shrine precincts, or riverine views along the Kamo or Ōi. A smaller number are botanical [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) studies or compositions from documented excursions to Nikkō or Tokyo. Kotozuka's self-published format meant that some prints entered circulation without formal series titles or catalogue designations, particularly works produced for direct studio sale or private exhibition. The print would share the technical characteristics of his broader output: hand-printed from hand-carved cherry or shina plywood blocks on dampened [hosho](/glossary/hosho) or kozo-based [washi](/glossary/washi), with multiple color passes registered by [kento](/glossary/kento) corner guides and printed with a [baren](/glossary/baren). Whatever the specific subject, the print almost certainly belongs to the Kyoto landscape and architectural genre that defined Kotozuka's career and for which his studio maintained its most developed production resources.
