Description
Untitled Etching (4) is a representative example of Kumi Obata's small-scale intaglio production, executed in her standard black-on-cream palette. Obata, born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1966 and based in Tokyo, came to etching around 2000 after earlier work in graphic design, and her plates carry the imprint of both disciplines: the technical discipline of fine-art intaglio combined with the legibility and economy of commercial illustration. Compositions of this kind typically centre a single subject within generous negative space, the plate mark visible at the perimeter, the artist's signature and edition number penciled below the image in the conventional manner. The absence of a descriptive title, common across her catalogue, reflects her reluctance to overdetermine reading; the image is offered as observation rather than narrative. The print's likely circulation through small Tokyo galleries, Japanese print fairs, and international online dealers is consistent with the quiet but steady distribution that has characterised her career.
