Description
The fifth in this group of untitled etchings continues Kumi Obata's exploration of the small-format intaglio as a vehicle for close, deadpan looking. As with her wider catalogue, the sheet is printed in black ink without aquatint or surface tone, relying entirely on bitten line to model form. Obata's draughtsmanship is unusually consistent across more than two decades of practice: line weights and hatching densities recur from plate to plate, producing a recognisable house style that her collectors find easy to follow. Stylistically, her etchings sit alongside contemporaries such as Sachiko Yoshida and Mihoko Kasamatsu in the contemporary Japanese intaglio scene, distinct from the dominant strain of large-scale colour woodblock that defines the better-known sosaku-hanga lineage. Untitled Etching (5) is the kind of modestly sized, signed and editioned sheet that has anchored her presence in international markets, where her work circulates through specialist print dealers in Europe, North America, and Japan, often alongside her postcard, calendar, and matchbox-label productions.
