Vent Violet

A woodblock print titled "Vent Violet," French for "Violet Wind," in which Kumi Sugai gives color and form to an invisible force. Wind was a recurring motif for Sugai, whose abstract compositions often evoke movement, direction, and velocity. The violet hue introduces a chromatic warmth unusual in his frequently monochromatic work, suggesting a specific atmospheric quality, perhaps the charged air before a storm or the fragrant breeze of a flowering season. Sugai's ability to render the intangible as a graphic shape, bold and immediate on the printed surface, reflects his training in both Japanese brushwork and European modernist design.
