Description

Matsuri Chochin 2, edition 46 of 150 from 2004, depicts the paper lanterns (chochin) that illuminate Japanese summer festivals, swaying in long rows from temple gates and market stalls, their warm glow transforming the night into something magical. The chochin is one of the most immediately recognizable objects in the visual vocabulary of Japanese matsuri culture, and Kaneko renders it with the same graphic directness he applies to tabi and sensu: the round form, the striped surface, the red or white colors of celebration.
