Sensu 21

Sensu 21 is the twenty-first study in Kaneko's "Sensu" (folding fan) series, edition 32 of 100 from 2005. The folding fan — a quintessentially Japanese object that collapses flat utility into elegant decoration — becomes in Kaneko's hands a vehicle for graphic invention. Folded and partially open fans create geometric shapes that play with positive and negative space, while the fan's surface provides a field for his bold color work. The series demonstrates his sustained interest in traditional Japanese objects as graphic raw material.
