Goyo completed only 14 woodblock print designs before his death in 1921, making every genuine impression extraordinarily rare. His bijin-ga are among the most refined of the entire shin-hanga movement. "Woman at the Bath" achieved $40,075 at Bonhams New York in 2020; Sotheby's estimates of $15,000–$25,000 are typical for top examples.
A woman with a circular fan and a small hexagonal box containing fireflies — a summer composition from Taisho 9 (1920) that combines the conventional bijin-ga accessories of the summer season with the magical presence of the firefly. The firefly cage was among the most charming accessories of the Japanese summer, fireflies being prized for their luminous abdomens that lit the darkness of summer evenings with cold, pulsing light. Goyo's woman holds both the fan (a tool of cooling) and the firefly box (a source of living light) in the composed attitude of summer enjoyment.
