$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maekawa's early sosaku-hanga works are historically significant. Bold, expressive prints are most valued.
The industrial district of Honjo in eastern Tokyo — one of the working-class shitamachi neighborhoods along the Sumida River where factories and workshops were concentrated — appears in this 1945 print from Senpan's "Recollections of Tokyo" series. Made in the year of Tokyo's destruction by firebombing, the print is an act of memory as much as documentation — the industrial Honjo that Senpan depicted was being destroyed even as he worked, its factories and warehouses reduced to ash in the March 1945 raids. The "Recollections" title acknowledges what the series was already becoming: an elegy.
