Description
The Karuizawa New Road — the modern highway built through the fashionable mountain resort of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, connecting the summer colony of diplomats and wealthy Tokyoites with the larger road network — is Senpan's subject in this undated print. Karuizawa's combination of cool mountain air, European-influenced resort architecture, and proximity to Tokyo made it the preferred summer destination of Japan's internationalized elite, and Senpan's "new road" subject captures the modernity that was transforming even this traditional mountain retreat.
