Description
Akan refers to the Lake Akan region in eastern Hokkaido, a volcanic landscape of caldera lakes, conifer forests, and Ainu cultural settlements. As the first plate in a numbered set, Akan Number 1 likely establishes the geographic subject through a broad landscape view, perhaps the lake itself, the surrounding peaks of Mount Oakan or Meakan, or a shoreline scene. Maekawa Senpan's landscapes depart from the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition of Hiroshige in their flatter, more graphic treatment, with simplified masses of colour rather than detailed atmospheric perspective. Carving on Hokkaido subjects often emphasises the textural qualities of forest, water, and volcanic terrain, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) used selectively for sky or distant hills. The numbered format situates the print within Senpan's documentary [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) practice of producing regional sets rather than isolated images, a working method shared with contemporaries such as Hiratsuka Un'ichi and Azechu Umetaro.
