Description

This second version of the year-end fair subject revisits the toshi no ichi market that Senpan treated in an earlier composition, likely exploring a different vantage point, crowd arrangement, or atmospheric condition. Returning repeatedly to subjects that engaged him was consistent with his working method: variant compositions allowed him to solve different technical and pictorial problems within familiar material. The year-end fair offered inexhaustible possibilities—shifting crowd density, varying vendor configurations, the cold light of late December against warm colors of stall awnings—and the social warmth of the scene aligned naturally with his sensibility. This second version may offer a closer view of individual figures and market goods, or a wider panorama placing the fair within its temple-ground context. Crowd scenes of this complexity involve numerous blocks across different tonal ranges, with precise baren registration required to prevent misalignment through many successive inkings. The two versions together demonstrate the sosaku-hanga artist's freedom to revisit a subject without commercial constraint.
