Description
A ship's deck offered Senpan a relatively unusual setting — angular geometry, railings, distant horizon, fellow passengers — and this print of the S.S. Murasaki captures a moment that ties his observational instincts to the increased mobility of mid-twentieth-century Japanese life. Whether the scene shows passengers at the rail, the working deck, or a quieter passage, the subject would have appealed to Senpan's interest in figures observed in their actual surroundings rather than in imagined or ceremonial ones. Compositionally, ship decks lend themselves to bold horizontal and diagonal lines, against which figures can be placed as compact silhouettes — a structure well suited to the simplified vocabulary of sosaku-hanga woodblock. The print also reflects the broader twentieth-century willingness of Japanese artists to admit modern transportation and travel into a medium long associated with traditional landscape and the pleasure quarters. As with much of Senpan's work, the image attends to the small reality of the moment rather than to the grand fact of the journey.
