Description

This second plum orchard print, distinguished from its companion by composition or seasonal moment, likely presents an alternate view of the subject — perhaps a different angle through the trees, a narrower framing on a single flowering branch and trunk, or a contrasting time of day. Maekawa often produced multiple prints around a recurring theme, treating subjects as opportunities for variation rather than single definitive statements. The handling fits his sosaku-hanga practice: hand-carved blocks, visible tool marks in the dark contour of branches, and broad flat areas of pink or white pressed onto absorbent washi paper. His plum subjects depart from the polished kacho-e of earlier ukiyo-e by accepting irregularity as part of the print's character, an approach aligned with the wider sosaku-hanga commitment to the artist's own hand at every stage of production. Plum blossom carries an established seasonal meaning in the Japanese visual calendar, and Maekawa's repeated returns to the subject reflect the way his work tracked the ordinary turning of the year rather than dramatic narrative.
