Description
The third Karuizawa view extends Senpan's engagement with the Nagano resort, perhaps capturing a seasonal moment, a building, or a corner of the village he had not addressed in earlier compositions. Across his Karuizawa prints, the artist tends to favor large flat passages of color, simplified silhouettes, and the textured grain of the woodblock left visible on the sheet — qualities that distinguish creative-print methodology from the polished commercial nishiki-e of the Edo period. His blocks were typically cut to permit irregularities rather than to suppress them, and the resulting prints carry the imprint of their making in a way that workshop ukiyo-e did not. Senpan's commitment to printing his own work meant editions remained small and individual sheets often vary subtly. As a member of the Japan Creative Print Association (Nihon Sosaku Hanga Kyokai) founded in 1918, he helped establish the framework within which artists like himself could circulate such prints to a small but committed audience.
