Description
"Night of Shinjuku" from the "Scenes of Last Tokyo" series — the "last Tokyo" referring to the pre-destruction city that the wartime bombing was in the process of eliminating — is Senpan's image of the entertainment district at night, its commercial lights and urban density rendered with the directness of a printmaker who knew these streets. The "Last Tokyo" title transforms the urban night scene into something elegiac: this is the city as it was, before the fires, before the reconstruction, before the new Tokyo that would replace everything he had known.
