A tall, slender black column stands upright against a plain white backdrop, built from dozens of thin, stacked square plates whose corners alternate outward so the edges form a continuous zigzag pattern down all four sides, coming to a pointed tip at the top and a flat base at the bottom. The surface has a matte black finish with a faint grainy texture, and hard side lighting casts a long, sharp diagonal shadow across the pale grey surface to the right of the piece. This 2015 work by Masayuki Tsubota is made of gesso and powdered mineral pigments bound with glue over basswood.
