the layer of self_yohs

This is a three-dimensional wall-mounted work: a stack of thin, staggered rectangular panels in a solid mustard-yellow, each offset slightly from the next to build a fanned, layered relief that projects out from the wall. The panels are uniformly colored with no surface imagery, and gallery lighting casts a stepped shadow behind and below the piece that echoes its rippling profile. Mounted against a plain white wall, "the layer of self_yohs" (Masayuki Tsubota, 2015) is rendered in gesso, powdered mineral pigments, and glue on basswood.
