Part of a series dedicated to the Tuolumne meadows region of Yosemite, this print depicts the Lyell Fork river at first light, capturing the cool blue-gray palette of high-Sierra dawn before the sun crests the surrounding peaks. Printed on handmade Japanese [washi](/glossary/washi), the sheet's absorbent surface allows the water-based pigments to diffuse subtly, producing soft edges where mist or low light meets the stream's surface. The choice of washi connects this California landscape directly to Japanese printmaking practice, a deliberate continuity given Schwaberow's lineage through the Yoshida family. The still water of the Lyell Fork would provide an opportunity for reflected color and horizontal compositional banding, techniques well-suited to the graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) washes central to the mokuhanga process.
