Description
"A Visitor" (客人, kyakujin) depicts the social occasion of receiving a guest — one of the fundamental rituals of Japanese domestic life, governed by complex codes of hospitality, appropriate dress, the preparation of tea and refreshments, and the specific spatial choreography of welcome. Shuntei renders the visitor's arrival or reception with attention to the social dynamics of host and guest: the differential postures and expressions that communicated the relationship between visitor and receiving household, the physical arrangement of the reception space.
