Description
"August" (其八 名月 — "the eighth, harvest moon") from 1898 depicts the August moon-viewing tradition — the observation and celebration of the full moon, particularly the harvest moon (jugoya) that was one of the year's most important occasions for moon appreciation. Shuntei renders the moon-viewing scene with the characteristic composition of figure and celestial object: the moon itself prominent in the composition, the human figures arranged in the postures of shared appreciation, the nighttime quality achieved through careful tonal management.
