Beauty subjects are especially sought after in this category. Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
"Beauty and Cherry Blossom — Pleasure Boat" (Yusan-bune, 1899) combines three of Shuntei's characteristic subjects: the beautiful woman (bijin), the cherry blossoms of spring, and the pleasure boat that conveyed urban leisure-seekers to scenic riverside locations for flower viewing. The combination placed the subject at the heart of the traditional bijin-ga vocabulary while giving it a specifically Meiji social setting: the organized pleasure excursion by boat was a recognizable recreation of the period's urban middle class. The cherry blossoms provided backdrop, the boat the social frame, and the bijin the aesthetic focus.
