Description
"Hagoita — Badminton Shuttlecock" (やり羽子, Yari-hane) depicts the New Year's game of hanetsuki using a hagoita (decorated wooden paddle) to keep a shuttlecock in the air — the traditional winter game that was particularly associated with the New Year season and with young women's recreation. The hagoita paddle itself was a decorated object as well as a sporting implement, often featuring elaborate designs of kabuki actors or other popular subjects on its painted surface. Shuntei renders the specific activity of keeping the shuttle aloft with its characteristic rhythm and energy.
