Description
"October" (其十 紅葉 — "the tenth, autumn foliage") from 1898 depicts the October spectacle of momiji — the autumn coloring of Japanese maples and other deciduous trees, whose brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows made the season's foliage viewing (momijigari) one of Japan's most beloved annual events. Shuntei renders this October subject with the warm palette of the autumn color peak: the maples transformed, the women's kimono echoing or complementing the seasonal colors, the composition celebrating the abundance of the season's specific beauty.
