Description
Attributed to Miyagawa Shuntei, this untitled woodblock print belongs to the body of figure and landscape work the artist produced during the Meiji period. Shuntei's compositional approach in figure prints places considerable weight on negative space, allowing the white of the [washi](/glossary/washi) ground to read as atmosphere around a central figure. Kimono pattern conventions in his work are rendered through selective registration of pattern blocks against flat undercolor layers, a technique that requires precise [kento](/glossary/kento) alignment to avoid ghost impressions. His prints circulated through the commercial publishing networks that supplied illustrated magazines, album sets, and single-sheet prints to a Tokyo readership familiar with both Edo woodblock traditions and contemporary Meiji illustration styles. The title, subject, and series of this specific print are not recorded in accessible catalogs.
