Description
This untitled woodblock print by Miyagawa Shuntei likely belongs to his body of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) depicting women in domestic or leisure settings characteristic of late Meiji printmaking. Shuntei's figure compositions typically employ a shallow picture plane, placing one or two women against a patterned or architectural backdrop. The color printing would have involved multiple carved blocks, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations used to suggest fabric texture and skin tone. [Nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) technique, with its layered color registration, allowed Shuntei to render the fine details of kimono pattern—checkered, floral, or seasonal motifs—that identify a figure's social status and the time of year. Without a surviving title inscription or series cartouche, the exact subject remains unidentified, but the print reflects the commercial publishing networks that distributed single-sheet figure prints in Tokyo during the 1890s and early 1900s.
