Description
This print juxtaposes a black cat with birds in a composition that carries inherent visual and narrative tension. The cat's dark form — dense, solid, defined by the key block — anchors the composition against lighter birds rendered with finer line work and possibly softer color. Oi works in a tradition where animal subjects allow for both formal play and quiet humor. The contrast between predator and prey is a recurring theme in Japanese decorative art, here treated through the mokuhanga process. Printing a true black requires multiple ink applications to achieve depth and surface richness on [washi](/glossary/washi). The birds may be shown in flight or perched nearby, their arrangement creating directional energy within the composition.
