Description
This print integrates the image of a cat with calligraphic elements, combining two classical Japanese visual traditions. The cat form may be constructed entirely from calligraphic brushstrokes, or a depicted cat may be accompanied by Japanese text rendered in a cursive style. Oi's approach likely draws on the visual affinity between the fluid gesture of brush calligraphy and the graceful contour of a cat's body. Translating brushwork into carved woodblock requires that the calligraphic line be cut into the block in reverse, preserving the character of the original stroke. The [washi](/glossary/washi) surface absorbs ink in a way that maintains the warmth of the calligraphic gesture. The result blends literary and pictorial traditions characteristic of Japanese art.
