Description
This individual page from the 'Hagoromo (Feathered Robe)' publication, produced between approximately 1984 and 1986, is one of several original woodblock prints that Matsubara contributed to this artist's book exploring the classical Noh drama of the same name. As a page rather than a standalone print, it would have been conceived in relation to accompanying text and other images in the sequence, creating a narrative rhythm across the publication. The Hagoromo story — a celestial maiden's feathered robe is taken by a fisherman, and she must dance to recover it — lends itself to images of flight, transformation, and the liminal space between human and celestial realms. Matsubara's carving would likely render these themes through abstracted figural forms, sweeping gestures, and the textural qualities of washi paper absorbing layered pigment.
