Description
This [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e) portrait depicts Ichikawa Ennosuke in the role of Kakudayu from the kabuki play Toyama Seidan, a drama centered on the legendary magistrate Toyama Kinshiro and his court. Published as part of Shunsen's Nigao-e-shu (Collection of Portraits), the series represents a systematic effort by publisher Watanabe Shozaburo to document the leading kabuki actors of the Taisho and early Showa periods. Shunsen renders Kakudayu's character through precise attention to facial expression and costume detail, employing the close-cropped bust format he favored for actor prints. The composition focuses on the actor's physiognomy and stage makeup rather than scenic background, following a nigao-e tradition in which the convincingness of the likeness was paramount. Subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations model the face and garments, while the mica-dusted or flat ground typical of this series isolates the figure against an uncluttered field, directing the viewer's attention entirely to characterization.
